New Residential
Although the primary focus of the firm's residential projects for 30 years has been the unique challenge of working with existing structures — additions and renovations — the firm has completed a number of new homes in eastern Massachusetts, both for private clients and custom designed for fine home builders. These homes have ranged in size from a modest 2,500 square feet to a current home of 14,000 square feet. Paul has also completed new multifamily projects from 2 to 67 dwelling units.
His basic philosophy follows the line of the popular book "The Not So Big House"— it is in the details and not the size that one finds comfort anda sense of home. Personal involvement with his clients and their active participation in the design and construction process is important to Paul.
The Expandable House
The winner of a competition by a well-known lumber company, Paul's Expandable House was designed to easily and logically accommodate a variety of additions. This was one of the earliest homes designed with passive solar heating in mind.
The premise was to allow a customer to purchase the base house (1,325 sq ft) as a package (plans and materials). Additional packages (again plans and materials) could be purchased as the needs of the owner required and their budget allowed.
It is shown here with a two-story family room and master bedroom, two-car garage and deck (three separate packages).
