Conversion of the Hunt-Hosmer Barn (c.1825)
Concord, MA
This structure is an iconic image in the Concord landscape (adjacent to the North Bridge
National Park) had deteriorated over the past 35 years and was in danger of collapse. The owner
had subdivided the property leaving the barn as a stand-alone lot subject to the whims of the real
estate market.
The Developer/Contractor and Paul worked closely with the Concord Historic Districts
Commission which recognized the only viable option was conversion to a single-family home, or
the barn would eventually be razed and the Commission would be facing approval of a
McMansion on the site.
The only components which were salvegable were the timber frame and the roof boards. A new
exterior steel skeleton allowed preservation of these elements while sheathing the building with a
new esterior and insulated roof. The rear of the house, out of view from the public way, opens
on to fields and woodlands with two-story windows.
